Vision: Our vision is a Nebraska where every military veteran has a home, a job, a purpose and an understanding of mental health.
Mission: The Mission of 22 Heartbeats is to end military veteran homelessness--and reduce veteran suicide--through transitional housing, vocational training, peer support and mental health research studies.

Summary of Program: There are over 100 military veterans in the Omaha metro area who are homeless. Many military veterans are at risk for suicide at a rate much greater than the general population. 22 Heartbeats aims to build supportive housing for homeless military veterans, and furthermore provide support for residents of these homes, including job training, financial literacy, and mental health services. We hope to build 5-6 one-bedroom homes per year on land offered at very low cost in the Omaha community.

What service will be included

22 Heartbeats is not the first organization in Omaha that is focusing on housing our local veterans. 22 Heartbeats, however, has a different vision to create a community within a community promoting a transitional program that involves other nonprofits from the area in order promote independence and responsibility for growth. Veterans will live in our supportive housing for 6-12 months with the goal of them transitioning to self-sufficiency during this time.
Each month one step will need to be completed in order to stay in our program. Steps will include participating in a therapy and rehab program, obtaining employment, opening a bank account, applying for disability and getting a driver’s license. Future plans will be to provide permanent/affordable housing through our program as well.
A mentor veteran will volunteer their time ensuring the transitional veteran is staying active with the program, assisting them with needs and providing transportation to appointments and work-related functions.

Housing Project
1. Home designs will be approximately 650 SQFT at a cost of about $100-$150 per sqft
2. Total cost of each home will be approximately $65,000-$80,000

*All homes built through this project will be managed and maintained by 22 Heartbeats in collaboration with ESM Strategies, LLC to ensure a above average living standard for the Homeless/Disadvantaged Veteran Community as they work through the established and agreed to Tenant Compliance and Rehabilitation/Vocational Program.

Military Veteran Homelessness - Homelessness does not discriminate, nor does it grant immunity to any subset of the veteran population.
            i.   Veterans, specifically, face unique challenges when it comes to finding safe and affordable housing.
ii.         Not only must they navigate the affordable housing market, they often face economic                      hardships, multiple and extended deployments, and, in some cases, mental illnesses that hinder one’s ability to find the assistance they need.
iii.        Every year, over 37,000 veterans experience homelessness nationally[1], and US Housing and Urban Development estimates are that 153 veterans in Nebraska are homeless.[2]

Identification of solution  - 22 Heartbeats commits to the development of a supportive housing program for homeless military veterans. This program will consist of wraparound and integrated services that will include actual provision of high quality single-unit housing built by 22 Heartbeats contractors, job supports, training, financial literacy, mental health and other activities with the goal of participants becoming self sufficient, employed, with a purpose in life. This will both result in ending veteran homelessness and preventing veteran suicide.
